The Spamhaus project is an initiative driven by the organization of the same name based in the United Kingdom. This is an important organization that most entities in the business of bulk email marketing should know and understand intrinsically. It is probably not an exaggeration to state that Spamhaus is the gold standard for identifying and protecting people worldwide against the actions of spammers. It is estimated that thanks to the lists that are published by Spamhaus, nearly a billion spam mails are blocked everyday from reaching recipients. The organization also specifically targets ISPs that provide services to spammers by blacklisting them as well. This as well as the specific targeting of spammers has gotten Spamhaus in two very notable legal battles in the US and in Austria. In the former case, while Spamhaus lost the case, the accused had to file for bankruptcy; while in the latter case, pressure forced the accused entity to comply with anti-spam practices.
The Spamhaus architecture is based on DNSBL or DNS Blocklists. A DNSBL is basically a list of spammer IP addresses as well as a list of the addresses of service providers to spammers. These DNSBL lists are added and improved upon every day with a team of researchers continuously looking for new victims. These lists are then referred to by anti-spam software and spam filters to identify spam email. Email marketing that follows the rules of marketing on the internet usually has nothing to worry about from the list. However, Spamhaus also has collaborations with various ISPs that support its causes; therefore, getting blacklisted by one ISP despite being in the legitimate business of mail marketing could get you on a DNSBL.
Spamhaus has been responsible for some great success in the field of using DNSBL to rid the world of spam. Unlike advanced spam filters that use mathematics like the Bayesian method and Markovian discrimination to learn how to identify spam, Spamhaus uses reported spammer activity as a baseline. Not only this but being a dynamic organization, it goes after the service providers to spammers as well. This is important because while a spammer can remain anonymous, a service provider to a spammer cannot. This is probably a contributing factor to the slow demise of spam in the world.
Of course, it hasn’t been smooth sailing all the way for Spamhaus and many organizations that include spammers and email marketing entities alike have campaigned not only against Spamhaus but DNSBL in general, as they believe that this is a restraint to free trade. The logic is rather simple: if a person decides not to read a mail that is legal but when he makes a group that actively wants to stop the practice of another group, that is an unfair trade practice.
Whatever the arguments are, the fact of the matter is that the efforts of spam filters whether running off DNSBL or mathematics have done such a good job of preventing unsolicited mail that the numbers have decreased significantly.
