Is my car worth repairing?
I have a 97 Mazda Protege. It’s a great car and is in excellent shape, has been running great. The inside and body look like brand new. For the last 9 months that I’ve owned it its ran perfectly…EXCEPT I just found out that I had to replace the trasmission! (Apparently, there was a small leak and a broken sensor…what ever that means?)
I can not afford to pay a car note every month (single mom, living in Los Angeles- paying Los Angeles rent, and bad credit). .Even though I live in Los Angeles, I don’t drive very much. I walk my daughter to school and then hike the three blocks over to work; But I need to have a way around the city; especially with a 4 year old.
The cost of the transmission is 950 and 225 in other repairs (O2 sensors, fuel filter, etc.). I really don’t know much about cars. Is 1200 too much to put into a car that is 10 years old and 100000 miles on it?
Repair the Protege, especially it if there is nothing else wrong with it.
As a rule of thumb, even if you spend $1800 or less per year in repairs on your car, then you should keep it. This comes out to $150 per month and you can’t find a decent car for less than that, plus the cost of maintenance, per month.
