Cosigner for student loan?
okay so im trying to apply for the sallie mae smart option loan and i want to get my dad to cosign but he says his credit isnt good because he declared bankruptcy a few years back. but ever since then he’s done good things money wise. he completely paid off our house without missing a mortgage payment, has never missed a bill payment or had anything shut off.
do you think i will get approved if he cosigns???
honestly, i have enough confidence in myself that i dont think the debt will have to fall back on my cosigner but i just need one because its required
If you believe/know that a cosigner is required for your student loan, then by all means, you should do it because it is for your educational purposes. But coming from direct experience, it is never a good thing to have a cosigner for any of your accounts. I messed up personally by having a cosigner and eventually when I filed for bankruptcy, the debt was transferred over to my sibling. The creditors do not care that you have filed for bankruptcy, they just care that someone else will be paying for the debt.
Try to avoid a cosigner at all cost.
