Filing bankruptcy while in jail?
My brother is in jail and will be for about a year. He owes a lot of money due to a car accident (about $10 grand) and more money to the state government, bills, etc.
I called a bankruptcy office for him. They said he has to meet with them face-to-face after he gets out of jail to file bankruptcy. Why do you think they need to meet face-to-face?
He has no job, no house, nothing. He is a former drug addict and has felonies due to theft to support the habit.
What do you think can help him get out of all of his debt *while* he is in jail? He plans on going to a rebab program with the Salvation Army upon discharge so I doubt he’ll have any wages to garnish once he gets out.
Any advice for him and all of his bills?
Nothing. And even after he gets out, there is no guarantee that a banktuprcy court will set aside judgements for a damage award or for state judgements.
