How far back can one city to raise taxes?
I recently received a letter from a surprise city I in ten years have lived for more than one. They claim that in the years 1997 and 1998 I did not pay my taxes and I owe them city over $ 700. I had no knowledge from this requirement until recently and am still not convinced that I even owe. I filed bankruptcy (Chapter 7 Total liquidation) in 2004. My question is, can, as try to collect far back the city? This alleged debt is 13 years old! The city and state is in Dayton, Ohio, in case anyone curious.
Ouch. Here is the Problem to the point. The law does not start until you file your tax forms city. Most people in cities, the city taxes are living, are totally clueless there is even a form. They pay their taxes through withholding tax on their paycheck and is considered a declaration. If money is not withheld (either because the employer does not, or lived in the city and worked outside of it, or you were self-employed), you must have saved the form itself. Short on revenue from taxing authorities do their best to all the old money to find and collect them. Matching processes that were once done by hand now done by computer. The cities and states have data-sharing programs between them and the IRS … so they have an easier identification of people who pay did not want to find them. Your complaint is not uncommon. The shade of bankruptcy, that no discharge debt if you knew about it and it in the bin. Even if you had known it would be your ability, they are by the nature of Control are limited and if you had been examined. Call Dayton and either pay or ask for a payment plan.
