Why are health care costs, the biggest cause of bankruptcy in the U.S.?

It surprised me that this was the case also with the Health insurance. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/american_journal_of_medicine_09.pdf So why is this the case and what can be done to things to change?

As our health system is designed to make money, not to help sick people.
